I celebrated my birthday this weekend in Chicago and had a blast! I was with my family & close friends and couldn’t have brought in 24 any better ;) Here are some b-day pics I wanted to share from the weekend.
Me and my bestie Britney (her tumblr) headed out to go shopping for birthday outfits!
My birthday cake!
A closer look…isn’t it so cute?! Cotton candy, mini ice cream cones, and a chocolate covered pretzel :)
Added the jacket & time to roll out!
I didn’t know they made em like this anymore ;)
Cab ride fun :)
The pics ceased after this … smh, I must do better lol Just know that I had a fabulous time with my parter in crime!
Moisturizer is sooo important for great skin! Embryolisse Lait-Créme Concentré is one of my favorite moisturizers. The brand has stamped it as the “24 Hour Miracle Cream” because of how versatile the lotion is. You can use it as a primer, moisturizer, makeup remover, and even to reduce any irritation after shaving (it’s an essential in many makeup artists kit as well). I clearly need to order some more ;)
Here’s how to make your moisturizer work better for you:
1. Exfoliate: Hydration will only penetrate the skin when you’ve gotten rid of the layers of dead skin cells.
2. Rub into damp skin: Pat your skin dry after you exfoliate (never rub!), then work in your moisturizer. This is the best way to really seal in moisture. (same goes for body lotion!)
3. Plug in a humidifier: Your moisturizer works by drawing in water from the environment. The more moisture in the environment, the better your moisturizer works. Try a cool mist version :)
Hi McKenzie! I absoluteley love your blog! I am a student at Paul Mitchell on my way to becoming the best hairstylist in America and I was wondering if you have any insight into where I should start looking for internships/assistantships??
That’s great! I love your ambition :) My advice to you would be to research the path some of your favorite hair stylists took to get to where they are today. Shadowing/assisting under talented stylists (in your city) is also a great place to start not only for the priceless experience but also the connections you can make for the future.
Are your hands a little rough? You can use your exfoliating face scrub to remove the dead skin on your hands just like you do with your face. Gently massage the scrub on your skin, rinse, and moisturize with a hydrating lotion.
Voila, oh-so-smooth hands just in time for Spring :)
I celebrated my birthday in Chicago this weekend and had a blast with my family and closest friends! It was definitely chilly in the windy city, which called for me to dust off my leather jacket and bring it along for the trip.
I chose to go with a dress that was ladylike, light, and flowy, and of course edge it up with a structured jacket & motorcycle boots.
If natural kisses from the sun aren’t quite your forte, then bronzer will become your new BFF! Bronzer is used just like blush, but is meant to give you a more sun-kissed, just-back-from-the-beach glow that will have the guys wondering how you look so luminous. The goal is to look exactly that … sun-kissed! Here are some helpful tips and great products to get to started with enhancing your beautiful skin :)
Picking a Bronzer
Shimmer? Matte? Highlighter? Yes, there are many options when it comes to bronzers, but take a deep breath and don’t feel overwhelmed. There are a few simple things to keep in mind.
1. Pick a bronzer that is right for your skin tone. It’s easy to go too dark and look dirty or too light and look shiny and ashy.
2. Pick a bronzer that is one or two shades darker than your natural skin tone. Look for descriptions like “dark” and “deep” or higher-numbered labels. Make sure it’s pigmented.
3. Bronzers come in liquids, powders, sticks and beads. So, experiment and play around by choosing the one that makes you look your best.
TIP: If you’ve got normal-to-oily skin, try a powder formulation. For dry skin, a cream or gel bronzer is probably the way to go.
(pictured above are two bronzers I use on a daily basis: (left) Bobbi Brown Illuminating Bronzer Powder in “Bahama (7)”, & (right) Revlon Color Stay Mineral Finishing Powder in “Sunkiss (030)”.)
First note, a little can go a long way. It’s better to apply less and add more as you go. You don’t want your bronzer to look like it’s just sitting on your foundation or bare skin, so blending is key!
1. Sweep your bronzer on with a big fluffy brush on areas of your face the sun would hit — the temples, cheeks, bridge of your nose, chin and along the hairline. Make sure to tap off any extra bronzer before you apply to avoid going overboard.
2. As for the rest of your makeup, keep it simple. A pretty peachy lip gloss, soft pink cheeks and warm eyes complement bronzer well. If you are comfortable without foundation, bronzer is great to wear alone on top of clean, bare skin.
TIP:If you have oily or combination skin, use oil absorbing sheets to gently blot any excess oil away. This prevents you from potentially removing your bronzer and looking splotchy.
Product Review: Too Faced Primed & Poreless Powder
Got shine? If you have combination to oily skin or large pores you want minimized, then this product would be great for you.
The Too Faced Primed & Poreless Skin Smoothing Priming Powder (that was a mouthful) is a silky translucent powder/ finishing veil that minimizes the appearance of pores and fine lines, and controls shine for a “complexion-smoothing, flawless finish.”
I’ve been using this loose translucent powder over my foundation (mainly in my t-zone area) to set my makeup and keep it in place for the day. I especially like to use it to set my concealer under my eyes to avoid it from creasing in this heat!
When using this powder, I would recommend to be minimal and add only as you need it. If you apply too much, you could fall victim to an unnatural, sheer, white finish on your face (especially on darker skin tones).
My skin really does have an airbrushed-esque finish to it after using this primer powder and it sets my makeup nicely without it appearing cakey!
TIP:After sweeping the powder under your eyes, take a clean, big fluffy brush and make a single swipe under your eyes just to remove any excess powder that may have been left behind. (You can also take a picture of yourself with the flash to double check the blending as well!)
Today was such a beautiful day! I couldn’t be happier that Spring has finally arrived! My Texas roots had me fiending for the warm weather to show it’s face lol. Hope you like my threads of the day … I’d like to think of it as a mint themed day :)
What I’m wearing:
-H&M mint blouse -Madewell jeans -Zara heels -Jimmy Choo bag (Amazing thrift find ;)…one’s lady’s trash is another lady’s treasure!) -My favorite Michael Kors watch
There’s nothing wrong with a little tasteful, lacy bra that peeks out from time to time. These gold & turquoise earrings I got at a boutique back in Austin, the necklace is an oldie I stumbled up on while perusing through my jewelry box. Shades … from Walmart. Crazy huh? I’m the last gal to judge a book by its cover ;)
Thank you thrift Gods for lookin’ out for a playa!
I sure hope everyone else is out and about enjoying this weather :)
Talk about a chic and totally girlie product to whip out of your bag! I found this adorable Australian shell lip balm while browsing the internet (a dangerous place) and had to try it out! So they sent me one right on over :)
The Organic Island Shell Lip Balm is a 100% natural lip balm and 100% real … yes, it’s a real beach shell that’s been cleaned with a high shine finish sourced from recycled and damaged shells that washed up onto the shore :) Aww, saving the planet :)
The Tiger Crown shell is pictured above (which I absolutely love!), but you also have five other selections of shells to choose from. Each shell comes with a unique mirror attached on the inside making it super convenient for us girls so we won’t have to carry around an extra mirror!
Like I mentioned before, the lip balm ingredients consist of 100% organic, natural, and Australian oils such as coconut oil, roseship oil, beeswax, lanolin wax, jojoba oil, macadamia oil, and mango seed butter.
Obviously I fell in love with the clever shell casing. It’s very well put together, and the lip balm is nourishing on my lips & tastes like honey. There isn’t really a scent to it, which is fine by me, because I like to layer my lipstick and lipgloss over it and don’t want too much going on. These would make for such cute gift ideas, not to mention as you pull your shell out of your bag, it’s a great conversation starter ;)
Hi McKenzie, 1st of all i absolutely Love your name and your blog!! Im not much of a make up person, besides wearing mascara, so I was wondering if you had any make-up tips for dark skin girls. I would say i am probably a shade or two darker than Kelly Rowland.
Thank you love :) Since you are a makeup newbie, I would recommend your summer staples to be a tinted moisturizer (Laura Mercier & NARS have great ones), bronzer (Revlon Colorstay in Sunkiss is a fav of mine) , and a great coral & pink lipgloss or lipstick …along with your mascara of course! Hope this helps you :)
You guys already know I looooove jewelry and accessories! A recent find I stumbled up on were these super EDGY and GORGEOUS rings from Plukka’sRazor Mitten Collection! Sinfully bad a**, these rhodium and 18k rose gold rings are covered with diamonds and white sapphires … sexy!
Hey Mack (hope that'snot offensive:-)... Just a quick one: Do you have any heat damaged ends in your hair & if so, how do you make it blend in with the rest of your hair. I presently have a cropped style but the front strands of my hair are heat damaged so I just want some tips. Thx.
No sorry I don’t have heat damaged ends. Sometimes my hair will get dry and I just made sure to keep it really moisturized with my leave-in Mixed Chicks conditioner and Mizani Moisture Stretch cream (when wearing it natural).
You may be putting too much heat to your hair which is causing the damaged ends. Consider getting your hair trimmed to get rid of the dead ends, and ask your stylist what products they recommend to protect your hair if you prefer wearing it straight. Hope that helped :)
When I read this news, I had to see what MAC was bringing back. There are plenty of MAC products I’ve fallen in love with, just to find out that they won’t be making them anymore :( But this time MAC is leaving things up to you!
They want you to head over to their MAC Facebook page and vote for the discontinued products you want to see back in stores! You can pick from 18 of the most requested lipsticks, glosses, and eyeshadows from past collections. The top 3 fan pics from each category will be available this July on maccosmetics.com .
The polls close March 30th, so get your vote in if you want your favorite products back ;)
I was looking at Fashion Bomb Daily and saw a post on designer Marco Marco that caught my attention instantly. While looking at some of Claire’s favorite pieces, I clicked through his site to see what else he had to offer a fashion fiend like myself.
Two ombre inspired Marco Marco pieces had my heart racing! I love his concept of being bold and still remaining classy with enough left to the imagination.
First this black show stopper number with sheer blue & green ombre mesh cut outs on the side … appropriately titled the “Fitted Black Dress.” Pricey price tag of $650, but you will be sure to turn heads! Love it!
Second I spotted these multicolored “Gradient Leggings” that I could style in so many different ways! Price tag: $115. Aren’t they HOT!?
Ok I’ve gotten quite a few questions lately asking what some of my personal favorite blog sites are.
I use this really cool site called Blogluvin to keep track of all of my favorite blogs! If you havn’t heard of it before, it’s a really dope blog site that lets you look up your fav bloggers and organize their blogs in separate categories (whatever you decide to name them!). You can scroll down the news feed and see which bloggers posted something new for the day. This site makes it so much easier to keep track of everything. I’m on there too … just click the photo to the left and follow me to make it easier to check my blog daily :)
I can’t list them all, but here are some of my favorite blogs that I check daily (in no particular order):
While out on the town this weekend, I wanted to give my Impress nails (press-on manicure) a try! I got samples of the nails back in January, and did a previous post on them here in December while watching the live blogger tutorial.
In the picture above, you can see that I decided to polish over the design and make them black. I did this because I didn’t care for the sample design sent to me. It was similar to a regular french manicure and had a silver flower on it (it just wasn’t my style).
Anyway the nails come in a cute plastic nail polish bottle in whatever design you choose. They are just like press-on nails with a sticky adhesive on the back of the nail that you can peel off and stick to your nail bed.
-These are great for when you are pressed for time but still want to jazz up your nails. -No drying time and lasts up to a week. -I love the selection of designs you can pick from. (Click here). -They are very sturdy! No worries about them popping off in public lol -You can use the leftover nails as accent nails if you just want to apply one on your ring finger and polish the rest of your nails yourself :)
-Because I polished over the design, my polish chipped the night of really bad, as you can see below. (But that’s my fault because they weren’t designed for that lol). -Matching up the nails to my actual nail bed was a little challenging. Some nails were bigger than others and didn’t fit my nails that great, so I had to do my best with matching them up.
**I wore my Impress nails just for the night and removed them by applying nail polish remover around the edges and slowly peeling them off of my nail.
Impress Nails are available for purchase at stores like CVS, Walgreens, Kmart, H-E-B, Right Aid, and Walmart and retail at $5.99-$7.99 each.
Have you tried Impress Nails yet? How was your experience?
Yep, that’s me … naked for the world to see :) I havn’t worn any makeup in the last 3 days, and boy let me tell you, my skin has never felt better!
It is vital that you let your skin breathe and just take a break from wearing any makeup at all. If you’re just hanging around the house during the weekend or running some simple errands, do it with a clean face!
I will admit that I havn’t always been as comfortable in my own skin as far as not wearing ANY makeup and people actually seeing me out in public lol. In high school, my skin was so not cool (breakouts galore), in college my skin improved drastically (at least that’s how I see it when I look back at old photos of myself lol). Now I’ve been taking better care of myself overall by eating right, exercising, and taking breaks from wearing makeup to give my skin some breathing room. It’s made a huge difference!
Clear skin all starts with your skincare routine (& genetics). You need the following:
2.A Clarisonic … this is optional, but it’s made a heck of a difference in how smooth my skin feels! I talked about it in this post a while back, and I still feel the same way!
3. A Toner. I used to used fancy toners, but now I’m loyal to good ol’ natural witch hazel (applied with a cotton ball). Toner removes any left over dirt and makeup your face wash happened to miss, & cleanses the skin one last time :)
4. A great moisturizer. Everyone’s skin type is different (ex: dry, combination, oily), so you need to find a moisturizer that’s right for you. Most importantly a moisturizer with SPF, unless you plan on applying SPF over your moisturizer. I have combination skin and I’ve been using Olay Complete All Day UV Moisturizer for sensitive skin for the last year.
5. A serum for dark spots & breakouts. Shamefully, I will admit I used to pick and pop my pimples, causing my skin to hate me and produce annoying dark spots on my face :( I’ve been using Clinique’s Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector since last summer and wrote my review on it here. I’ll be posting an updated one this week, but this $50 bottle of magical serum has definitely improved my dark spots when I finally decided to use it diligently. Finally, for breakouts I use a combination of Clinique’s Spot Healing Gel & a dab of my Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask to dry it up at night.
If you didn’t learn anything from this post, I hope you take away this…
Every woman should be comfortable in their own skin and truly believe that they are beautiful with or without makeup.
P.S: Promise me that after that long day/night at work, after that fun night of partying, that no matter how much energy you have left in you …. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS WASH YOUR FACE BEFORE BED!
I have natural hair and I have recently colored it, do you have any recommendations on a deep conditioner or color safe shampoo? I love Jane Carter products but they do not have a color line.
I use Mixed Chicks and it doesn’t strip my hair of any color, and it keeps my hair moisturized. I use their deep conditioner and leave it on for 15 min or longer if I have time, and I use the leave-in conditioner when I wear it natural. Redken also has great products from color processed hair.
I can’t get enough of wearing leather this winter (if you call this winter lol). Although I’m more than ready to throw on a sundress and sandals, cool leather will do for now ;)
Last night I was out with a girlfriend to go grab dinner and a drink at a nearby spot. She’s below, isn’t she gawgeous :)
What I’m wearing:
-American Apparel off the shoulder shirt -Alice & Olivia leather panel leggings (bought from TJ Maxx! ::score:: ) -Steve Madden motorcycle boots -DIY red leather oversize clutch that me & my mom made a few months ago -Old wooden rosary necklace -Black sunglasses from Walmart (it’s all about finding treasures in places least expected) ;) -Watch from Nordstrom -David Yurman bracelet & stacked rings
(OPI “I Have A Herring Problem” & Essie “Brooch the Subject” nail polish)
My girl Coco Loco!
(Revlon lipstick in “Berry Haute" & Revlon Colorburst lipgloss in “Decadent” )
